Jacquard represents a valuable method for weave a decorative pattern or a design directly into the fabric, creating a raised effect that makes the fabric high quality. This process is mainly used with yarns such as cotton, viscose and linen to create elaborate and precise designs, giving fabrics a refined and elegant look.
But how does the Jacquard loom work? A fabric is made of threads that are woven together: the vertical threads are called warp and the horizontal ones are called weft . The weft is inserted between the warps to create the actual weave of the fabric.
History and origins of damask fabric
Joseph Marie Jacquard , inventor of the loom of the same name, brought about a real economic boom in French textile production in the 19th century. Before then, looms were operated manually by a weaver with the help of two assistants. It was a long, tiring job, which involved many imperfections, both in the weaving and in the designs.
The Jacquard loom, on the other hand, invented between 1804 and 1806, introduced a semi-automatic system that used punched cards to produce precise designs on the fabric. While traditional looms could only work with about 20 threads, the Jacquard loom allowed for the weaving of up to 1300 threads simultaneously .
The perforated cards are the secret of beauty of the beloved jacquard fabric, which, although today, with our knowledge of computers and programming, may seem simple, at the time represented a real revolution.
The secret to these complex designs lies in the punched cards: it may seem simple today with our knowledge of computers and programming, but in Jacquard's time it was a truly revolutionary invention. By combining the use of these perforated cards made on stiff cardboard with the use of needles and a mechanical cylinder, Jacquard was able to automate the fall of the needles, which pinched the threads to create the desired design.
